What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants don’t just restore missing tooth roots and crowns; they also revitalize your appearance and your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As titanium or zirconia posts that act like tooth roots, their placement within your jawbone allows a firm foundation to be established. This ensures adequate support is provided to a customized restoration that is crafted to restore and enhance your aesthetics.
Unparalleled Experience You Can Trust
Dr. Sally Alkamary is an expert in the field of implant dentistry and not only serves as a dentist in Springfield, but also teaches at New York University. As a clinical associate professor at NYU in the College of Dentistry, she teaches other post-graduate dentists how to place dental implants, so they can create long-lasting results for their patients.
This focus on education and application causes her to stand out among other dental professionals in the area.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Although it may seem like a long wait, unlike temporary restorations such as dental bridges and dentures, getting dental implants in Springfield requires a unique, multi-step process which spans several months. While you may be eager to get your new smile underway, you can rest assured that the long-term benefits are well worth the investment in time and effort. At Glamourous Smile Dental Spa, Dr. Alkamary is proud to complete the entire dental implant treatment in house. In fact, she’s so good at what she does, she teaches other dentists how to place implants as a professor at NYU!
Although every patient’s treatment will look slightly different, there are four main steps that you can expect to occur during your own dental implant journey, including the consultation, surgery, osseointegration, and the delivery of the final restoration.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
At your initial consultation, your implant dentist in Springfield will review your oral health and medical history to determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. If necessary, we can work with you to complete any necessary preliminary procedures like gum disease therapy, tooth extractions, or bone grafting. Then, we can move on to planning the rest of your dental implant procedure, including what you can expect step-by-step such as the timeline and total cost.
Dental Implant Surgery
At Glamourous Smile Dental Spa, we proudly place dental implants in-house. This means you won’t need to drive around from office to office, nor will you need to file multiple dental insurance claims or pay multiple dentists. Plus, you’ll get to work with the same caring, friendly team you already trust!
On the day of your surgery, Dr. Alkamary will numb your mouth to ensure you are completely comfortable. Once ready, she will make an incision in your gums, place your implant post(s) in the jawbone, close the gums, and then place protective caps over the posts. You will then be free to return home to rest and recover.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment Placement
The success of your dental implants depends on a process known as osseointegration, where the implant permanently fuses with the jawbone. This is necessary to ensure that it stays in place for a lifetime and can withstand the pressure of chewing a full diet. Although this process varies in duration from patient to patient, it usually takes between three and six months.
Following successful osseointegration, you’ll return once again to Glamourous Smile Dental Spa to have your abutments placed. In some cases, this may be possible on the day of your initial surgery. However, if not, you’ll require a second, minor procedure which will have a much less intensive recovery period. As you heal over the next few weeks, your final restoration(s) will be crafted from the impressions Dr. Alkamary took of your smile during your initial consultation.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations
Once your prosthetics are delivered to our office and your mouth has healed from the abutment placement, you’ll return to our office once more to have them placed. These restorations may be in the form of crowns, a bridge, or even an implant denture, depending on how many teeth you’re replacing.
Before you leave, Dr. Alkamary will check to ensure that your bite is comfortable, and if all looks and feels great, you’ll be free to go and enjoy your newly rebuilt smile!
Dental Implants FAQs
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are small titanium posts that act like artificial tooth roots. They are placed into the jawbone to support crowns, bridges, or dentures, creating a strong and natural-looking replacement for missing teeth. Over time, the implant fuses with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, providing long-term stability and function.
Why Are Dental Implants So Popular?
Dental implants are considered one of the most effective tooth replacement options because they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, implants stay securely in place, help preserve jawbone density, and can last for decades with proper care.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most healthy adults with missing teeth are candidates for dental implants. Ideal candidates should have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone to support the implant. Even if bone loss has occurred, procedures such as bone grafting may help prepare the area for treatment. During your consultation, your dentist will evaluate your oral health, medical history, and smile goals to determine the best treatment plan.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
With proper care and regular dental visits, dental implants can last decades and, in many cases, a lifetime. Good oral hygiene, avoiding smoking, and maintaining healthy gums are essential for long-term success.
What Is the Dental Implant Process?
The dental implant process typically involves several steps:
- Initial consultation and imaging
- Implant placement surgery
- Healing and bone integration
- Placement of the final crown, bridge, or denture
Healing time varies depending on the patient and treatment type, but many cases take several months to complete because the implant must properly fuse with the jawbone.
Are Dental Implants Painful?
Most patients report that implant placement is easier than expected. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia, and many patients experience only mild soreness afterward that can typically be managed with over-the-counter medication and post-operative instructions.
How Do I Care for Dental Implants?
Dental implants should be cared for just like natural teeth. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings are important to keep the gums and implant healthy. Your dentist may also recommend specialized cleaning tools depending on your restoration type.
Can Dental Implants Replace Multiple Teeth?
Yes. Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, or even a full arch using implant-supported bridges or dentures. Implant dentures offer greater stability, improved chewing ability, and a more natural feel compared to traditional removable dentures.
Will I Need Bone Grafting Before Dental Implants?
Not everyone needs bone grafting, but patients with insufficient jawbone density may require it before implant placement. Bone grafting helps strengthen the jawbone to support long-term implant success. Your dentist will determine whether additional procedures are needed during your evaluation.
How Successful Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants have a very high long-term success rate when placed by experienced professionals and maintained properly. Studies have shown implant success rates exceeding 95% over many years.
How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?
The cost of dental implants depends on several factors, including the number of implants needed, the type of restoration, and whether additional procedures such as bone grafting are required. During your consultation, your dental team will review your treatment options, timeline, and financing solutions.
Why Choose Dental Implants Instead of Dentures or Bridges?
Dental implants provide unmatched stability, preserve jawbone health, and do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Many patients prefer implants because they allow them to eat, speak, and smile with greater confidence while achieving a more natural appearance
